Easy Christmas Tree Ornament – the Bottle Top Snowman

Bottle Lid Snowman - Handmade Christmas Decoration -- beafunmum.com

This is so simple and fun to do. What I really like about it is that it’s made out of items that are most likely to be found around your house, so you don’t need to make a special trip to the shops.! It’s very quick too – a perfect afternoon activity for some festive fun with the kids.

Instructions

Put on a Christmas Carols CD, gather the kids and get into the Christmas spirit!  You’ll need the following:

Materials

3 bottle tops

(milk bottle lids work too and if you collect white ones, you can skip the painting part)

white acrylic paint

paintbrush

black and orange permanent marker

red ribbon (approx. 15 cm)

hot glue gun and glue sticks (Super Glue tends to seep through the ribbon and leaves a visible mark)

What to do

Step 1

Wash and dry your bottle tops.  Then paint them with the acrylic paint.  Three coats should be enough, making sure to let them dry between coats.

Step 2

Fold the end of the ribbon over to create a loop. Dot with the glue gun and then stick it closed. This loop will be used to hang the decoration on the tree.

Step 3

Apply a dab of glue to the back of each of the bottle tops and attach to the ribbon.  For extra stability, you can add a dab of glue between each bottle top and the ribbon.

Step 4

Once dry, use the black permanent marker to draw on two eyes.  Use the orange permanent marker to add a jaunty carrot nose and finish off with little black dots underneath for the coal mouth.  Add 3 little round dots on the middle bottle tap for the snowman’s coal buttons.

Tip: make sure you draw the snowman face on the correct bottle top (the first one) with ribbon loop the loop at the top.

Step 5

That’s it! You’re all done! Now hang your Bottle Top Snowman on the tree and admire him!

Other ideas

  • You can play around with other fun ways to embellish your snowman – perhaps adding a green ribbon around his neck.  Or add some sequins or left over buttons from your button box to the red ribbon loop to decorate it.
  • You could also try making the Snowman with plastic milk bottle lids.  And if you can find white plastic lids it will save you the step of painting them white! You could even use googly eyes instead of drawing them on.
  • Why not collect a stash of plastic milk bottle lids and use them to make other Christmas tree decorations.  You could make a jolly Father Christmas by sticking a red paper triangle to the front of a white lid for his hat and then drawing on his smiling face.
  • See what else you and the kids can come up with. It’s a fun and inexpensive Christmas craft activity that will keep the little ones entertained.  And it’s also a great little present for grandparents or teachers.
