Backyard Easter Hunt

I raided BIG W for some Easter stuff to create a fun backyard Easter Hunt. 

I’ve come up with a variety of ideas to make the backyard Easter egg hunt fun. Pick one, two or more ideas and make it memorable.

Make a Station

It’s helpful to have a station for kids to come back to, even if the hunt is the main event. This can be a table, or a picnic rug with scatter cushions.

Craft Ideas

Find step-by-step tutorials on the blog:

• Bunny ears
• Bunny bag
• Cupcakes

Depending on the age of the kids, and if they are interested in doing craft, make baskets and hats as a craft or do this beforehand and have them ready. I prefer this to buying baskets because they are super easy and you can recycle them.

Nest cupcakes are another easy craft activity for kids; they can decorate their own cupcakes with a few simple ingredients you can find here.

Games

Below are simple game ideas that don’t require a lot of planning or instruction.

What you need:

• Plastic eggs (or tennis/plastic balls)
• Plastic container/bucket
• Wooden spoon
• Cardboard box

Feed the Bunny Game: Make a bunny box (instructions here). Mark a point for where to stand and throw plastic eggs or roll balls into the bunny’s mouth. Could be fun to try this game with carrots too!

Egg & Spoon Race: Mark a starting line and the finish. Then balance a plastic, chocolate or boiled egg on a wooden spoon between them. If the egg falls, stop and pick it back up before moving forward.

Throw Eggs in a Basket: Mark a starting point. Throw plastic eggs (or balls) inside a basket (or bucket). Adjust the throw distance to make it more challenging. Idea: This could be set up as a earn chocolate eggs game. Get five in, and receive an egg.

Food

• Fruit platter
• Nest Cupcakes

Food is not necessary for egg hunts, but I always offer fruit. Give a shot at making a bunny shaped platter with pineapple, apple, blueberries and strawberry.

This is the grand finale, and below are tips to make it the best: 

1. Establish a sharing policy. I always say to my kids that we hunt, find, and then come back and work out if we need to share out any eggs and treats.
2. Hide eggs in a variety of places, some obvious, and some not-so-obvious.
3. Non-chocolate treats are a fun idea too. Think of small useful things you may be able to fit inside plastic eggs, or hide on their own. For example: erasers, single Lego figurines or individual Trashies.
4. Egg tree – this is a novel idea and surprisingly easy to set up. Simply hang wool or string from tree branches and clip a plastic egg over the top. Find more details on making an egg tree here.
5. Glow in the dark hunt is a favourite at our place. Crack a glow stick and put them inside a plastic egg and hide them when it’s dark.
6. For older kids who like a bit of a challenge, a scavenger hunt is fun. Write out simple clues to lead kids to where the next egg or clue will be. At the end could be a big egg, stuffed bunny or surprise. Below are a few examples of possible clues:

• The first egg you will find, where it’s cold inside (fridge)
• Next you will need to go, where we keep the stuff to mow (garage)
• Don’t stop now, you need to creep, to the place where you sleep (pillow)
• It’s time to explore, around the front door (under mat)
• Now hop, hop, hop, to where we keep the mop (cupboard)
• Go and scour the place where you shower (bathroom)
• Think books, and where they are kept, and you will find something wrapped. (Bookcase)
