3 Ways to Make Pom Poms

3 ways to make pom poms

Pom Poms are a simple wool craft that children primary school age and above will enjoy making for a variety of uses including pom pom garlands, pom pom rugs or even a pom pom toy for the pet cat to chase! Here’s three simple methods for making pom poms that don’t require a special pom pom maker… all you need is a few items that you probably already have around the house.

1. Fork method for making pom poms

You will need:

  • a fork
  • wool
  • scissors

how to make a pom pom using a fork

  1. Cut a length of wool, approximately 30 centimetres long and set aside.
  2. Begin to wrap the wool around the fork, leaving a gap at the bottom and top of the fork head. The more you wrap, the thicker your pom pom will be.
  3. Take the set aside wool and tie it tightly around the ball of wall, as shown in the picture.
  4. Take some sharp scissors and cut the wool in the middle of the loop that has now formed, to create a pom pom shape.
  5. Trim the pom pom as needed. These make a mini sized pom pom.

You can use these to make critters, or trim them to mini size and glue them on to shoe clips (which you can buy online here) and decorate shoes.

  2. Begin to wrap the wool around the two toilet rolls, or around two of your fingers (or even bigger pom poms, around your palm. The more you wrap, the thicker your pom pom will be. The toilet roll method will yield a bigger pom pom than the finger method.
  3. Take the set aside wool and tie it tightly between the two toilet rolls, or between your two fingers.
  4. Take some sharp scissors and cut the wool in the middle of the loop that has now formed, to create a pom pom shape.
  5. Trim the pom pom as needed.

3. Cardboard template method for making pom poms

You will need:

  • cardboard
  • wool
  • scissors

how to make a pom pom with cardboard

  2. Cut out two cardboard templates, as per the picture shown. The finished shape should look like the Uber logo. The bigger the template, the bigger your pom pom will be.
  3. Wrap the wool around the double template, going over and over to ensure the pom pom is as thick as possible.
  4. Wrap the length of set aside wool between the two templates and tie tightly.
  5. Take some sharp scissors and cut the wool in the middle of the loop that has now formed, to create a pom pom shape.
  6. Trim the pom pom as needed.
