In August, I attended the annual Connect 2 Mums AusMumpreneurs Awards Conference. There was somehing that struck me about the conference and it’s taken me a while to work it out. Then, it came to me: It’s about mothers doing what mothers do. It’s all about mothers loving their families whilst being creative, intuitive and resourceful. I was like “YES” this is what mothers do (all mothers that is). We love our families, we meet needs, we are creative, intuitive and resourceful. We are mothers.
Many women I met at the conference left high profile jobs and traded a lower income for the opportunity to work around their family. Some created products out of need and grew their business from there. Others were looking for a creative outlet from their regular work. They all had something in common: they sparkled when they talked because of the love for their family. Over and over, I heard the same message and it wasn’t “you can have it all” but rather “I love my family”.
I had the opportunity to chat to the 2010 AusMumpreneur winner, Antonette Golikidis (founder of Little Innoscents) and she told me of her desire to raise her children the way she was. Her parents ran a small home business and, although home life was busy, they were together. Antonette remembered thinking her childhood was rather boring; however, when she became a parent, she found herself wanting to recapture the togetherness of how she was raised, for her own children.
“So I work from home, and I get to look out my backyard window where the kids are digging up dirt and getting up to mischief – and I feel like I’m there with them – that’s exactly where I want to be and it’s probably one of the best things about what I do.” – Antonette Golikidis
I encourage you to browse the businesses below (find more here) before you look elsewhere because you’re not just buying a product or service, you are buying passion and love. You’re not funding big company profits, you are supporting a family.

September 22, 2010 at 5:36 pmYou summed up the atmosphere so well Kelly.
I was unable to find the words other than to say that I don’t think I have ever felt more supported or comfortable in a room of just women before.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing this post and your time, and like you, I shop with my fellow mums before I spend my money elsewhere.
You are a kind and sweet mum as well as a fun one! x
