My Washing Machine Eats Socks

I’m serious: my washing machine eats socks!   I have an entire pile of single socks, the matching pair vanished — just like that.  It drives me nuts!  But I initiated a plan of attack.  Instead of putting socks in my children’s draws, I keep them all in a pretty basket.

Since I’ve been following through with the plan, socks haven’t been parted from one another quite so much.  And, no longer do we have a mad panic, of a morning, to find two socks that match.  There is, however, still enough single socks to keep the sock-puppet population going for a while.

Maybe I should stop blaming the washing machine…

…but then, maybe not…

See! I KNEW it!

Definitely…I’ve even proved it Kell!!! Pulled my machine apart once to check out the pump and found tiny little baby socks that had been missing for a couple of years!!! I do the same as you now and put all the odd socks in a bag in the laundry. Still amazed though at how many lonely sock there still are though.

I used to have a calico bag in the laundry for all the lost and lonely socks but after a while found I was forgetting to look in there and actually match them up! Now I leave the odd socks pegged on the washing line until the other half turns up.

My kids feet are a similar size I only buy white bonds socks. I have no idea about pairs but they always have enough. I top up every now and then. Mine seem to make it to the basket to the line and back again. I often find socks on the trampoline and under the seats in the car. One will be left in the washing machine and one in the dryer.

Since I started using a laudry bag for little socks and delicate items that I put into the washing machine I haven’t lost any. I once had a machine with a fluff tray and socks used to turn up in there all the time so machines can and do lose socks.

I’ve never used a bag to wash socks in. Only bras and undies. I’ll have to give that a try. Great idea!

    ROFL

I solved my socks problems by purchasing every family member one style of socks each.

It was a necessity started by purchasing speciality socks online for my husbands size 16 feet – they were $15 a pair and so worth it. Once I realised that having the same style of sock made it really easy to pair up his socks and there were never any missing pairs…well I went and did the same for the rest of us.

LOL Size 16! Flip! I thought my husband’s 13 size feet were big!! Excellent idea about the different colours for each child.

    Love that video.
My 4 yo just wears non-matching socks anyway. She likes one spotty, one stripy. 🙂

Yes, I have to admit, my kids wear non matching socks when necessary — which ends up to be quite a lot.

    Ha!!! There you go!!!
I have an overflowing plastic container of lone sock… perhaps I’d feel better about it if it was a pretty basket…

Kelly, do you want to know something slightly weird?! I have a very similar basket, that is home to all the pair-less socks in our house too! Sometimes the other sock just magically appears and a pair can be reunited, but for the most part, my basket has the same socks sitting in it all the time! Poor socks..

LIke everyone.. the missing sock issue is a problem in our household. I have the odd sock basket, the one style one colour per indivual, and peg together, fold off the line systems to try and combat the problem. I have had a friend suggest a “Sock Party”. Next morning tea get together, I am requesting my friends to bring their odd socks and we’re making pairs… we all pretty much shop at the same places and we all have kids around the same ages. They all play at each others places and apparently we will be amazed at the pairs we’ll find. The odd socks left over will be collected for Playgroup and Kindy sock puppet making!
