I don’t get out much. As you can imagine, I was excited at about going out with my sisters to the Michael Bublè Concert in Brisbane. Hoorah! Husband came home from work and bathed the kids as I dressed. Yes, I dressed up! {YAY!)
Can you see me? I’m in my bedroom, wearing a pretty dress and putting on a final coat of mascara.
“KELLY! WIPES! WIPES!” Three words I didn’t want to hear as I slipped on my favourite shoes underneath my long frock.
“KELLY! I NEED HELP!” My husband was calling.
“Bye Huney-Love. Thanks so much for looking after the kids tonight. I love you! Bye Babe.”
I did. Then I didn’t.
I walked into the toilet to rescue help my husband to find that my son, so proud he had taken himself to the toilet, had managed to get poo EVERYWHERE. Don’t ask me how. Now, when I say EVERYWHERE, I mean EVERYWHERE. There was poo on the walls, poo on the floor, poo smeared all over the toilet seat and all over my son. I just need to say the word “poo” one more time: poo. There.
“KELLY!!! HELP!!!”
“GET THE WIPES!”
“GET THE WIPES!”
After going through an entire a packet of baby wipes (almost) my son was clean enough…to have a bath.
To cut a short story, shorter: I was late. But I did get there in the end. I met my sisters at a restaurant before the concert and proceeded to tell them about why I was late over dinner. I never thought it would happen to me but it’s true: I can eat dinner quite happily while talking about poo. Isn’t that amazing?
We arrived at the concert venue and I tried to put on my I-know-what-I’m-doing face but I’m sure I still had the I’m-a-mum-and-I-don’t-get-out-much sign on my forehead. Ah, but what a fun night. My sisters made me laugh. Like really laugh. We sang and swayed. We swayed our hands from side to side. We linked arms and swayed in time to the music. Did I just use the word “swayed” three times? {This is Michael Bublè we’re talking about}.
Yes, it was hard to get out of the house and I still had toys in my handbag. I can never escape without something that screams “Mum” on me…But you know what? That’s okay with me. I was kinda glad to see the Toy Story Woody figurine sitting in the bottom of my bag. The fact is I’m Mum, wherever I go…even if the children aren’t with me. They are always in my heart and that is something to treasure. Motherhood is a job that never ends and it’s hard sometimes — true — but that is one of the reasons why being a mother is so special, because you ARE “Mum”. Not “a Mum” but “Mum”. While it was brilliant to get out with my sisters (like really, really brilliant), I always want to be the Mum with toys still in her handbag.
When was the last time you went out?

February 12, 2011 at 4:26 amLove your post! Here on the other side of the world I am going through the same thing! Last night my daughter showed me that she was wearing her “big girl panties” she was so proud. A few minutes later, I noticed that she had wet right through her clothes, I went to change her and realised that she wasn’t just wet. EWWW. Poo! Glad you got a night out. I’m am headed out for a big date with the hubby tonight. I can hardly wait!

February 12, 2011 at 8:32 amOoh that sounds like a great night out. That would be just awesome! Hmmm the last time I went out … lol I remember now, it was 2003, my first child was about 6 months and I organised my sister and her husband to come around and look after her. We went to watch a Rugby League game. It was great and we had a really good night out 🙂

February 12, 2011 at 8:49 amLaughing so much here! Only you could blog about poo and get away with it Kel! I’m so glad to hear you rose above it and had a great time.
My husband is dragging me away from the blog today to take me out for lunch. Just because. Rejoicing now because I won’t hear anyone calling Wipes! as I leave.

February 12, 2011 at 10:20 amI’m now crying I laughed so hard, this exactly the scenario that arises in my house (even when I’m only trying to go grocery shopping alone). It sounds like you had a wonderful time, you deserve it! The last time I went out without the kiddies was last month and it was the first time in nearly 5 years (*gasp* I didn’t think it had been that long!) I had a lovely time with my hubby and called to check on the kids quite a few times and yes I still had the customary toys and even a chewed rusk lol!!!

February 12, 2011 at 10:35 amI love Michael Buble and your shoes! Glad you got a night out Kelly. Hubby and I went to see Sting earlier this week and he was fantastic. Grateful for our wonderful neighbours looking after the kids and outting them to bed. Of course we found ourselves talking about the kids on the way to the concert and on the way home.
