Feature Home: A Room for Everyone

Today, I’m thrilled to welcome Rachael to Be A Fun Mum. I came across Rachael online (she used to have a blog called A Room for Everyone), when I was researching about storing children’s artwork.  I was immediately struck by her home because it looked like definition of family. It’s organised while still retaining loads of character and creative potential.  It’s bright and inviting, and I just get the feeling one would breathe a little lighter there.

I’m so happy to have Rachael here sharing a little of her story. Rachael is a country girl at heart. She’s happily married with two daughters (aged 5 and 3), and two stepdaughters (aged 14 and 20).  This is her first home renovation.

Kelly: Where do you get your inspiration from?

Rachael: Before I discovered blogs (I had already entered the renovation process), my inspiration came from the hundreds of home magazines I collected over the years. Australian Country Style in particular. Now, most of my inspiration comes from design blogs.

“I’m a country girl at heart.”

Kelly: How would describe your home design style?

Rachael: Amateur! I try to be family friendly in my choices, having both young and teenage children. The styles I love are French farmhouse, Hamptons and Modern Country. I buy things I love and they usually fall into one of those categories, I think!

“I buy things I love.”

Kelly: What’s your best tip for keeping the house organised?

Rachael: The best tip is, of course, a place for everything and everything in it’s place. Once a day (most days), I sweep through the house and anything that’s out of place goes into a big plastic basket and taken to where it belongs. I also have lots of baskets, trays and various other storage things to help! As every mother knows: having an organised house makes life easier but it’s not always possible!

Kelly: Renovating a home is a huge challenge. How have you survived the process?

Rachael: On the one hand, living through it [the house] in cramped quarters without a kitchen or laundry was stressful. But on the other hand, project managing it myself eliminated a lot of potential stress I believe. Being on site for a renovation of that scale is very important. Having a fixed price contract with a builder rather than hiring several different trades ourselves also made the process much simpler. As for the kids, I took them to lots of wide open spaces whenever I could and lots of cafes!

Which room do you love the most?

Rachael: The family room. That’s where we’re all together. And I love that it includes the kitchen and dining.

“I try to be family friendly in my choices.”

Kelly: How do you balance allowing your children the freedom to be creative while still staying organised in the home?

Rachael: This house is designed for our children. I let them play and create all day until 4pm when it’s ‘Cinderella Time’. That’s when they pack up, with help from mum. I think it’s too overwhelming and confusing for little ones to pack up independently unless they have a place for everything. Each playset has its own basket or container so the girls know where to put everything (and find everything!). We have a big art board in the family room with all their drawing and pasting things readily available underneath, scrapbooks for all the other art and endless jars for the treasures they collect. It works…most of the time..!

Kelly: I adore your ‘Kitchen Desk’. How does it add value to your family life?

Rachael: When it’s not used as a dumping ground, it adds enormous value! It’s a place to keep my laptop, pay bills, keep a pinboard, read a cookbook and write a shopping list, allow the kids to use a computer with supervision.

Rachael, thank you for showing us your beautiful family home. I’m in love with your ‘Mud Room’. Every family home should have one! I also love the idea of ‘Cinderella Time’. Rachael, you’ve created something very special for your family and I feel inspired.

Rachael, I’m in awe what you’ve done with your home. It has such a beautiful feel and I can just picture how your family must enjoy it! I love the idea of having a Mud Room where the kids can make the transition from the outside to the inside…and I’m thinking right now about ways I can make a little section like that in my home. Thank you so much!

I love your family space Rachael!!! It connects with so many of my own ideas that I’m dreaming about for when we finally move into our long term home! The colour pallette is so refreshing and makes me just want to take a big deep breath. I LOVE your kitchen desk, your mudroom and laundry. They are all areas that get so much use and should be considered in any family reno. Thank you so much for sharing on Kells blog and thank you Kell for finding such great inspiration. Now for a few more good seasons on the farm and our dream may finally become a reality too!

Oh my goodness! What a stunning post – and HOUSE! I am inspired to get even more organised. I love the idea of the kitchen desk – it would be so handy and convenient to have a small workspace in the room that I spend most of my time in. Wow. I.N.S.P.I.R.E.D.

oooh I adore that kitchen… look at all the drawers! I want our new kitchen to be full of drawers (no cupboards) just not sure if we’ll have the space. I also love the big wall of drawings and the frames in your kid’s room! Just lovely… I’m pinning lots of these photos for inspiration!

What an amazing and family friendly home. There is a place for everyone and it is great that Rachael has got a place for herself too. This has given me hope but in the meantime I am going to fantasise and think of additional ways to create more function in our multi-function tiny abode. LOVED!

This has got to be the most organised home I have ever seen! The Family room (with the board of children’s art) and the study are to die for! A mud room! Interesting!
I need a kitchen desk! What a fab idea! Then I don’t have to go to and fro from the study to the kitchen like I am now looking up recipes and writing a menu plan (oh yes that’s what I was doing slightly distracted by this amazing house)

Rachael, are you for hire?? 🙂 Seriously!! We are looking at buying a home to renovate, but I’m petrified of it…. but if I could have a home to look like that….. WOW!!! Just LOVE the organisation that is so evident in the way things have been built.

I adore Rachael’s gorgeous home – so organised and neat yet with so much character and warmth. Her little girls’ room is beautiful – I would have loved a room like that when I was growing up.

Just beautiful. I am so jealous of the kitchen desk. I have wanted a kitchen desk ever since I’ve had my own home to maintain. Our kitchen is unfortunately way too small and it looks like we will be here (small kitchen and all) for quite awhile so…

I’m pretty sure a lot of the systems Rachael uses are Ikea Expedit. My sister has them too. They seem very flexible so you can fit them into whatever space you have. It’s quite affordable too. Have a look at the range here:
      http://www.ikea.com/au/en/search/?query=expedit

They are on my ‘wish list’ when our family eventually settles down. Oh to dream 🙂

This house is stunning. I love how functional the home is and how stylish it is.

I was just wondering how big the kitchen is.

Rachael, I really hope that your family enjoy living in the beautiful home you have created.

Thanks for a great post. I’m very impressed by the house, especially the kitchen desk. This sounds like exactly the type of thing I need to work into any future renovations we are fortunate enough to complete. We have our eye on a property here in Sydney at the moment, so fingers crossed it’s ours to do up some day – I’ll be back then (if not before) to get more inspiration! Thank you.

This looks lovely perfect house perfect family and all, however to me the time and effort goes into my children different styles of parenting obviously. Am I jealous at how gorgeous this and how your children are involved in assisting with the maintenance of this yes and no. I feel these posts put high expectations on parents and this could (not to me personally, but to many parents I have come into contact with) have an effect on them….are they not doing a good job if their home doesn’t look as organized as this? Of course not but this helps them to believe they are not doing a good job. Good enough is good enough, this is not fun…..

relied on the video to make your point. You obviously know what youre
talking about, why waste your intelligence on just posting videos

Thank you everyone for the lovely comments about my home. Netski, I agree with you. Let me reassure you that my everyday life is not like this. The comments about organisation are what I ‘try’ to achieve each day. A lot of days, my children are left to play freely and the mess is ignored. I would go mad if I tried to have it any other way, and so would they! Some kind of order makes everyone feel more relaxed, but I have rooms that stay messy for long periods of time..There are more important things. – Rachael
