The Help Movie Review

It’s emotional, it’s humorous, it’s heartwarming, it’s challenging, it’s a must see movie: The Help.

PORTER NOVELLI sent me a double pass to see the movie, The Help.

I put on my “Hello! I’m Here!” earrings.

I went with my friend Bernie, and somehow, we ended up with these epic cups of diet coke.  And would you believe it: we actually finished it all. (Check out Bernie’s review over on her blog: The Help).

The Help Movie Information

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk.

From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

The Help Movie — My Review

It’s a movie that moves you. It’s full of courage, friendship, discovery, injustice, desperate housewives, social power, etiquette, fried chicken, pretty frocks, hot pants and a lot of sass. 

One can’t help but love the feminine fashion of the 1960’s. The use of interesting textiles and colours in the movie is a feast for the eyes.

I adored, believed and warmed to the unlikely friendship that formed between these three women; the actors delivered gorgeous performances.

It starts with one girl’s dream to write, and how her motivation to follow her passion opens her eyes to what was going on around her town. This girl, Skeeter, unlocks the voice of truth for many women who are oppressed by injustice and social inequality. But it proves to be dangerous work. Very dangerous.

After the Movie

It’s one of those movies — like Driving Miss Daisy and The Blind Side — that you want to talk about. I went back to Bernie’s house for a cup of tea and had a snuggle with her dogs.

Put simply: it was a heart-warming, inspiring movie and a wonderful night out. I say, go see it!
