GOOD CHOICE Sauces by Fountain

Brought to you by Nuffnang and Fountain

I’m (slowly) learning to become more aware about minimising the added sugar in our regular family food, because frankly, we just don’t need it. If we are going to have a treat, we will have a treat and that’s fine. I’m more concerned with the hidden sugar in many of the products I purchase. For example, yoghurt and tomato sauce, which are pantry staples in this house.

Tomato sauce is a condiment we always keep in the cupboard because dipping anything in sauce makes it better to kids, right? And in general, it’s a handy ingredient I use in many recipes, from scrolls to meatloaf.

I was interested to hear popular sauce brand, Fountain released a GOOD CHOICE range of sauces that have no added sugar and are gluten free. They also contain no artificial colours and flavours. The range comes in 5 flavours – Tomato and BBQ Squeeze, Sweet Chilli, Hot Chilli & 50% Salt Reduced Soy. You can find them in the Health Food aisle in Woolworths (so they are not in the regular sauce aisle).

Out of interest, I had a quick look at the ingredient levels at the back of the GOOD CHOICE Tomato Sauce compared to the different brand I had in the pantry, and found:

  • 86% Tomato Puree (Good Choice) compared with 60%
  • 1 grams sugar (Good Choice) compared to 6.4 grams
  • Sodium 90mg (Good Choice) compared to 195mg

Full list of ingredients are: Tomato Puree (water, tomato paste), Apple Juice Concentrate, Natvia (natural) Sweetener, Food Acids, Salt, Natural Flavour.

How I used it

I didn’t say anything to the kids; I just started using the product in recipes I already use sauce in.

I made scrolls (tomato & sweet chilli) and English muffin pizzas for the lunch box. The kids ate and enjoyed their lunch as usual. They especially loved the sweet chilli scrolls I made. The Good Choice Sweet Chilli Sauce has that yummy punch you would expect. Big thumbs up.

BBQ sauce for breakfast wraps. I’ll have a recipe for this soon. It has become a family favourite.

Soy dipping sauce for our favourite pork dumplings. I like the GOOD CHOICE soy even better than the regular soy. Its got a beautiful deep flavour.

Does it taste different?

For the BBQ and tomato sauces, I can tell the difference when I use it as a condiment (not bad, just different). My kids didn’t even notice. When used in recipes, they are as yummy as ever!

The soy is absolutely delicious – my favourite – and the sweet chilli sauce gives just the right amount of punch. I haven’t tried the hot chilli sauce yet, but will do so in a stir-fry soon. It’s good to know the more healthy option tastes good too; there’s a depth to the flavour that enhances the food. I’ve been using the sauces for a couple of weeks now and I’m calling them a big win!

I just had the chance to try them out too and liked them. Considering they are just as cheap, a good substitute to the usual sauces. Healthier = mega bonus 🙂

Oh awesome news!! This is perfect for our family… our kids enjoy sauce but I hate giving it to them knowing it’s quite high in sugar!
I’m definitely popping this in the trolley next shop! Thanks for the yummy recipes too!

Oh yeah, that’s quite a difference, especially the salt. I’d be interested in trying them out and seeing how they taste.

Oh YUM! I agree with the comments above, if I can use an ingredient that has less sugar, then that’s the choice for me. Going to try that tomato & BBQ sauce for sure. I hope they have plans for offering them in larger ml sizes, I normally buy for economy reasons and also because I like to decrease kitchen waste.

Fountain have deleted the Good Choice range – sweet chili/hot chili and Soy. Kids not happy. The Sweet chili had a nice kick to it and it was better without sugar. Disappointing Fountain- Cerebos didn’t have a market for them.

Where do you buy good choice sweet chilli sauce. Not Coles or Woolies?

    I live in Sydney.
