This is the most fun we have had with a sensory play activity in ages. I must admit it has the been frustrating for me as I tried so many different ingredients and methods to come up with the one that we thought was the best. But don’t worry, I’ve done all the hard for you and out of all my testing, there was a hands down winner and I have shared this with you below.
This slime recipe includes PVA glue, water, food colouring and borax. The inclusion of Borax might be a concern to some parents but I have looked into it in detail and the general consensus is that since the recipe only calls for ½ tsp, it is fine to use in the making of slime since such a small quantity is required. Borax is only toxic if consumed in large quantities and given that glue is the main ingredient, it would be expected that this is an activity suitable for children 4 years and older or children that no longer put everything in their mouths.
As an alternative, I tried to recreate the same or at least a similar substance using many different methods but unfortunately none of them even came close to the slime that used borax. I tried glue and dish liquid, glue and liquid laundry detergent, glue and starch and glue and Epsom salts and the end results were a whole lot of sticky mess and about 2 litres of wasted glue.
The glue and Epsom salt mixture formed a pliable substance but it was not stretchy and to be totally honest, we found it quite boring to play with.
So for the post today, I am concentrating on the method that uses the borax as it created a product that was every bit as good as the one you buy in the toy stores.
What you need:
- PVA glue
- Food colouring
- Bowls & measuring spoons
- Stiring spoon
* Borax can be found in some supermarkets (in the cleaning products isle) but I bought out container of borax from Bunnings
I have 2 recipes listed below. They use the same ingredients but in different proportions which create a different consistency. One is fast and runnier and the other is firmer (like silly putty) and holds its shape better. I have shown the difference in the photos. The yellow is the fast slime and the blue is the slow slime. Since you have the ingredients, why not try both with the kids and compare them. It makes for a great experiment!
FAST SLIME – slime that pours like soft serve ice-cream
- ½ cup PVA glue
- 3 Tbspn water
- Food colouring
- ¼ tsp borax
- 1 Tbspn warm water
- In a medium bowl, add PVA glue and 3 Tbspn water and food colouring. Stir to combine.
- In a separate bowl, add ¼ tsp borax with 1 Tbspn warm water. Stir to dissolve. Be specific when measuring out the borax because if you add too much, the slime will be hard and not stretchy.
- Pour borax solution into the glue and stir through. You will notice that the glue will start to clump together and it will be harder to stir. At this point, get in there with your fingers and stir through. Don’t stress if the mixture appears too sticky and soft as it will start to come together the more you stir it. It may take a minute or two so don’t give up and throw it in the sink!
- Soon the mixture will stop sticking to the bowl and you will be able to pick it up and play with it. Throw it on the bench and watch it spread out. Then just peel it off. Let it run through your fingers and onto the tiles like soft serve ice-cream. It is so much fun and you can play with it for ages.
- Store in a zip lock bag in the fridge. Make sure you seal it up properly and keep the bag upright as it can ooze through the seal and go all over your fridge (I am speaking from experience here….).
SLOW SLIME – silly putty that is firmer and holds its shape a little more than the above recipe.
- ½ cup PVA glue
- ½ cup water
- Food colouring
- ½ tsp borax
- 1 Tbspn warm water
Use the same method as described above.
- For use in children 4 years and older. This is because children at this age won’t typically put the slime in their mouths.
- Wash your hands after playing with the slime.
- DO NOT get the slime in your hair. This will result in a trip to the hairdresser and use of the clippers! It’s best to have children with long hair to tie their hair back before playing.
- DO NOT drop the slime on the carpet or outside in the dirt and grass. It is best played with on tiles, pavers, bench top, table top or any smooth surface.

Elmers glue is popular in the u.s., Elmers glue is considered to be P.V.A. glue.
BassimaJune 18, 2017 at 8:04 pm
You can try it with a glue stick

Emma ScottJuly 11, 2016 at 1:18 pm
I tried making the fast slime and it is horrible, it did not work whatsoever. I have been testing out different recepies to make it stretchy and the slime does not streatch whatsoever. I triple checked all my measurements AND ingredients also and it still did not work.
LilianaSeptember 17, 2016 at 8:23 am
I did it but I added shaving cream
ZZOctober 16, 2016 at 6:51 pm
If you add shaving cream, it is a whole different type of slime, it would be called fluffy slime. ; )
MariaDecember 9, 2016 at 11:57 am
Maybe you added too much water, too much borax or something, ,cause I made it and it’s great!
Erin A FugalJanuary 28, 2017 at 2:32 pm

If you want your slime to be stretchy then just add some lotion to the desired stretch. 🙂
Julia GoldMarch 11, 2017 at 10:43 am
Add hand or any type of lotion to it that makes it stretchy
UnknownMay 22, 2017 at 5:27 pm
even though it didn’t work for you doesn’t mean it doesn’t work
RebecaJuly 17, 2016 at 11:46 am
This worked out great!!!!! Thank you for that awesome recipe?
RebecaJuly 17, 2016 at 11:47 am
Sorry ment awesome !!!!! Not ?
CaitlinAugust 22, 2016 at 6:30 am
Followed the fast slime recipe perfectly and it did not work at all. It was incredibly hard. Worst slime recipe ever
KayJanuary 17, 2017 at 8:47 am
Thad really rude
KayJanuary 17, 2017 at 8:48 am
You added too much borax then, I happen to be an expert on slime, I have an instagram account and I do slime tutorials all the time. Add some location if you want it stretchy (shaving cream helps too) and if t is too hard, add more glue
KayJanuary 17, 2017 at 8:51 am
Oops I meant lotion not location
Kelly - Be A Fun MumJanuary 17, 2017 at 2:11 pm
HalleJune 7, 2017 at 3:43 pm
You don’t add more glue otherwise it makes it harder you need to soak the slime in hot water and break it apart and mix it around until you have the desired consistency
AlJuly 17, 2017 at 8:00 pm
I added more glue and mixed it kneading kind of like a dough and worked great stretched perfect slime. Thank everyone for the tip and thx for sharing recipe. My daughters had a ball with it.
slimeloverFebruary 13, 2018 at 12:02 pm
You should add lotion
CaitlinAugust 22, 2016 at 6:30 am
I meant to say the slime was incredibly hard
SativaAugust 30, 2016 at 2:06 pm
Tried the Fast slime, did not work, bummer!
SamanthaSeptember 17, 2017 at 12:10 pm
I tried the fast slime and it did work.
WasabiSeptember 25, 2016 at 6:53 am
Fast slime did not work. It sucked. Very disappointed. Do not try it
personJanuary 2, 2017 at 4:21 am
just let the borax dissolve an be patient and it will work do not discourage other people.
KayJanuary 17, 2017 at 8:53 am
I agree with you
TurtleJanuary 21, 2017 at 11:57 am
Okay I admit it Wasabi’s comment was a little bit on the harsh side but if no one said that it worked then everyone would keep trying it but it would keep not working and they would be wasting supplies I haven’t tried the recipe myself but another one I like to use is this
1/2 cup of glue
1/2 cup of water then mix the glue and water together and in a separate cup/bowl then add
1 1/2 cup of warm water
1 tablespoon of borax then mix it then add a little bit of borax water mixture to glue water mixture at a time until the slime forms u can also add lotion or shaving cream
TurtleJanuary 21, 2017 at 12:35 pm
So sorry I meant teaspoon
1 teaspoon of borax not 1 tablespoon!!!
ShaneOctober 9, 2016 at 6:04 pm
To everyone who says the fast slime doesn’t work, it’s because you aren’t doing it properly..
Mix 1/2 tbls borax in 1/2 warm water, and slowly pour little bit, then mix, pour, mix, ect until it is perfect consistency.
You’re welcome 🙂
NarisaDecember 14, 2016 at 8:07 am
i did that and it didn’t work
personJanuary 2, 2017 at 4:22 am
AnnaOctober 17, 2016 at 8:38 am
I tried making a normal borax solution slime and really thick and Crumbley what can I do to fix it
TurtleJanuary 21, 2017 at 12:38 pm
I’m not sure if you can fix it a couple of my friends had crumbly slime and they couldn’t fix it but the reason why it’s crumbly is because of too much borax
AnonymousDecember 5, 2016 at 5:01 am
This slime recipe sucked! I even followed the instructions in the comments and everything! I have not tried the slow falling slime but the fast falling slime sucks! So not try this recipe??????
KayJanuary 17, 2017 at 8:54 am
AudreyMarch 6, 2017 at 10:20 am
You people are fucking stupid it’s literally mixing 3 ingredients a monkey could do this I’m 13 and I’ve made multiple batches of slime using this recipe :))

BecksDecember 5, 2016 at 1:07 pm
The fast slime recipe did not work AT ALL!! Poured slowly mixed, poured, ‘mixed, purer mixed and BLAH!!! It didn’t work.
meDecember 13, 2016 at 3:33 pm
I think there might be too much borax. that, or it really needs to dissolve.
personJanuary 2, 2017 at 4:23 am
A certain personJanuary 5, 2017 at 10:10 pm
Instead of 1 tablespoon, you should use 1 teaspoon to one cup hot water and let it dissolve. Then use it the same way you would in the recipe
A certain personJanuary 5, 2017 at 10:10 pm
since there is less borax, it should work better
Disappointed in Southern CAJanuary 30, 2017 at 11:39 am
By any chance did you mix up the recipes for fast and slow slime? I made the fast slime 3 separate times and followed the recipe to a T. Each time it came out hard like silly putty. We’ve tried Elmers Glue, Aleene’s Tacky Glue and generic PVA glue. What am I missing? Recipe did not work. Terrible!
Worried in WisconsinJanuary 31, 2017 at 12:53 pm
I made clear slime and it’s crumbling?? It’s not stretchy at all and it doesn’t feel good when I poke it. Thought it would be calming but it’s giving me a panic attack instead. HELP HOW DO I FIX IT??
LolMarch 13, 2017 at 10:31 am
You can try adding shaving cream or lotions to “moisturizer” it ?
Mary-anne DoddsMarch 6, 2017 at 6:22 pm
I really don’t wanna say that this was terrible so instead I want to ask for help. My attempt for the fast slime turned out too wet but not sticky, not stretchy, crumbly and squishy. How can I fix this??? Anyone have any suggestions???
AmeliaMarch 10, 2017 at 4:18 am
I don’t live in the USA so I can’t get Elmers glue do you know what glue I should get?
And I’ve just attempted to make normal slime with Pva glue and borax and it were forming but it looked like curdled milk and wasn’t sticky or stretchy at all, where am I going wrong?
KayeApril 17, 2017 at 9:48 pm
I made the slow slime today and it turned out great! At first it seemed really runny and I thought it wasn’t going to work, but I kept stirring and eventually it thickened up and came together. The kids love it!
RebeccApril 27, 2017 at 1:14 am
Hi, we made this yesterday and it was amazing (fast slime).Today we are trying to make again but it is too sticky. We have it runny but too sticky and hard to get off the hands. What shall we do?
GMay 10, 2017 at 7:19 am
BORAX KILLED MY DOG
MadelynJune 24, 2017 at 12:26 pm

Omg that’s really bad
GMay 10, 2017 at 7:19 am
DONT USE BOORAC
TaraaMay 15, 2017 at 2:41 pm
My slime didn’t work, do you know why? It was basically liquid and didn’t go hard… a lot of money wasted on glue…
MadelynJune 24, 2017 at 12:24 pm
im gonna try it out and then comment how it turned out!
ErrynJune 27, 2017 at 2:32 pm
I wish I had believed the comments when I read them….this recipe totally does not work. Agree, lots of money wasted on glue and no result!
TiffanyJuly 9, 2017 at 3:48 am
What happened with yours?
TiffanyJuly 9, 2017 at 3:47 am
This took awhile to knead and get all incorporated, but if you have the patience, this slime rocks!! My kids made 2 gallons worth of the fast slime and it was so much fun. I had to do most of the dirty work of getting the goop to slime, but it was easy after the first bowl or two.
Thanks for this awesome recipe!! Sooo much better than the Elmers recipe with contact solution. I also used just a tad less than the 1/4 tsp of borax, which made it perfect.
Kelly - Be A Fun MumJuly 9, 2017 at 11:29 am
Yep, you have to be patience with this one!
r bosJuly 9, 2017 at 5:02 pm
Epic fail. Followed recipe to the ‘t’ but landed up with an awful crumbly mixture that went in the bin. Not happy…JAN!!!
CeciliaJuly 19, 2017 at 4:24 am
Fast slime does not work at all don’t try it
JustinJuly 23, 2017 at 1:21 pm
Ok mix same amounts of glue to water and dye with colour of choice then mix up a batch of borax and water in a separate bowl. it’s hard to desolve so just mix for a minute or 2 then seperate clear liquid from granulated borax and set aside clear borax mix for your solution. Add 1 teaspoon of clear borax to glue mix at a time and mix well.soon as you start to see glue curdle, start to mix with your hands and fingers clumping curdled glue together with your fingers.if it feels firm to touch but mix is still a creamy colour, grind and mix it back in with your fingers back to a paste texture and Add 1/4 teaspoon more of borax mix.at this stage it is very temperamental so minimal use of borax is needed for desired viscousity of your slime.clump together again and glue will separate from water leaving colured water dye only.
sue tharpAugust 7, 2017 at 4:44 am
mine is to runny
PersonAugust 20, 2017 at 5:26 am
This slime recipe ( fast slime ) worked perfectly for me! Definitely using this again when I get more glue!
KateAugust 23, 2017 at 12:15 pm
For those of you who had success with the runny slime, what brand of glue did you use? I have tried this recipe several times with a couple of different brands. I am scrupulous with the measurements. I have tried adding the borax solution 1/4 teaspoon at a time as suggested in the comments. Every time I have ended up with half the liquid left and a blob of “slime” which has no stretch at all and breaks into pieces as soon as it is squeezed or pulled. I’m getting fed up with the waste of time and ingredients. I’d appreciate any suggestions which might make it work.
TiffanySeptember 1, 2017 at 12:27 pm
I used the Elmers brand glue. Also, are you making sure your borax is completely dissolved before mixing it in? You literally have to keep squishing the clumpy ball into the juice until it all incorporates. I would start squishing it through my fingers and then picking it out of the bowl and squishing it in my hands really quickly. I then kept adding it to the juice and repeating. 🙂 Hope this helps!!
ZoeSeptember 12, 2017 at 7:26 am
My slime worked really really well
it was very clicky, pokeable and stretchy
u must be really bad at making slime if it didnt work for u
ZoeSeptember 12, 2017 at 7:30 am
continued from above
i literally just followed the recipe and i added warm water and it worked perfectly.
u might get a bit confused cause they say only 1 tablespoon of borax solution which looks really small but trust me it works
and i just kept stirring it
if its still sticky you could add another half tablespoon of borax solution but it might not work for u
I used Reno Art glue which is really good because I live in Sydney and I am 12
ZoeSeptember 12, 2017 at 7:31 am
I hope that this was helpful 😉
lizzyNovember 13, 2017 at 6:04 am
i think you should use saline solution
AnnieJune 9, 2018 at 3:29 am
That looks like fabulous sensory play! I need to find somewhere that sells Elmers glue and liquid starch here in Scotland! I’m also write about how to make slime with glue please give me a feedback for this slime making recipe.
AimeeJuly 9, 2019 at 5:27 am
I just tried the fast slime recipe, because I wanted a super stretchy slime to play with. The recipe didn’t work for me, initially. So, I decided to experiment. I ended up adding about 2 cups worth more of warm water. Played with it for a loooong time. It was clumpy and smooth at first; then, it became super stringy (like wet hair). Eventually, it turned into a sort of water slime. SUPER sticky, but really fun to play with in the bowl. Reminded my of 90’s Nickelodeon slime (I even used green food coloring).
I don’t think I’ll be using this recipe again, but it was fun to experiment with. 🙂
brobroDecember 4, 2020 at 6:11 am
is micowaving your slime so it will get warm so it can strech better bad for the slime?
