2016 marks 150 years since the birth of beloved children’s author Beatrix Potter — the creator of the much loved character, Peter Rabbit. Helen Beatrix Potter was born in London on 28 July of 1866. When she was 27 years old, Beatrix wrote an illustrated letter to Noel Moore, the son of Anne Moore (one of Beatrix’s former governesses). Nine years later, the story was in print!

To celebrate 150 years of Beatrix Potter, The Royal Mint produced official UK 50p coins and the uncoloured coins featuring the designs will be released into general circulation later this year. In addition to Peter Rabbit, another three collectible coins will be released later in the year to make up a four piece collection. This is the first time a children’s literary character has appeared on a UK coin.

March 3, 2016 at 5:18 pmWe grew up on the Peter Rabbit stories. My sister and I bought a book each time we had saved enough pocket money to do so. My children had our books and hey have been passed on to my grandchildren. Our 2nd Granddaughter, now 4, had a Peter Rabbit themed birthday party this year, complete with a cake with his picture on which my daughter in law made. It was a great success. I hope they pass on the stories to their children in time.
