Those with tweens/early teens might be able to sympathise with challenges finding clothes for this age group! I look for clothes that fit, that are not too kiddish but not inappropriate either. I’ve been asking around, and have compiled a list of top pics from parents for this age group. If you have any others to add — even small boutiques — please tell me and I’ll update this list!
Sizing
First thing to talk about is sizing. These kids are at an age where they sometimes fit into women’s clothes as well as children’s clothes. It can be hard to work out sizes. I pulled these measurements from the Target website because I find them quite true to size in general. This can assisting in seeing the overlaps in sizes and I find this useful for other women’s stores also:
- Girls size 12 is approximately women’s size 4-6
- Girls size 14 is approximately women’s size 6-8
- Girls size 16 is approximately women’s size 8-10
1. h & m
h & m clothes are a favourite at our place. We can usually find great clothes options for both boys and girls, for a good price too.
I have purchased clothes for all my children from h & m, including the shirts featured below.
2. Pavement
Coming in close behind in popularity with parents of tweens/teens is the Pavement brand. I hadn’t heard of it before and found a lot of lovely things on the website. Below are a few from the current range.
3. Dannii Minogue Petites (from Target)
I have purchased quite a few items from the Dannii Minogue range for my girls. They come in really small sizes, from a size 4 which is about a size 12-14 in girls, and size 6 is about a size 16 girls.
The top and jeans my daughter is wearing below is from the range, we also have the shorts pictured above. They are a nice length, which is hard to find in denim shorts.
4. Bardot Junior
If you’re looking for uber stylish clothes for this age group, Bardot Junior has some lovely pieces, from beautifully feminine to edgy. You can find them in dedicated stores, online and from places like Myer and David Jones.
We found this dress instore last season.
5. NEXT Direct
NEXT have a huge range of funky and classic clothes that go up to size 16 in girls.
6. Future You (from Target)
This is another one from Target that I have found has a limited but typically lovely range. I purchased the cute pictured playsuit from last season and it’s gone through two of my girls now. I have found the quality good and they are on trend too. However I would mention the sizing is confusing; I would prefer it to be either in girls or women’s sizing rather than from XS to L. It doesn’t quite correlate, however I have found generally:
- XS – Approx Size 10 children
- S – Approx Size 12 children
- M – Apprxo size 14 children
- L – Approx size 16 children
Below is an outfit we purchased from this range.
Other Mentions
There are other places parents mentioned, which I have listed below; however these brands can be a bit hit/miss in regards to suitable items.

February 3, 2017 at 8:31 pmMy 8 year old is very tall and it is hard to find appropriate clothes for her as she is already a size 12. We have found country road excellent ( but expensive) for finding clothes in her size that are still young enough for her

February 4, 2017 at 1:04 pmI’m struggling to find age appropriate and robust clothes from my 7yo who wears a se 9. We mainly have to opt for a combination of boys ranges and some handmade stuff as the girls clothing in those sizes is too grown up and just not designed to be played in.
The Next range looks good. Also we like funky tshirts from uniqlo.

May 23, 2018 at 10:41 pmhannah anderson is great for my tween.
having serious issues with my 14 yrs old teen. nothing seems to be lovely and decent. She is not overweight (runner) so she fits the styles but it looks to provocative not pretty. most dresses are mid thigh length, pencil legs, bare shoulders or off, short shorts.

September 15, 2019 at 1:45 amI just left the cutest tween clothing store on St. Simons Island. It’s called Lillie B. Tween. I didn’t want to go in at first because it is so boutique-ish (I know that’s not a word). I thought the clothes were going to cost a fortune but the prices were great. I’m not sure if they have a website. I know they have a Facebook page.
