If you were a child of the 80s or 90s, you’d remember the popular, sculptured dolls called Cabbage Patch Kids. Nearly every kid had one, unless your parents opted to buy the cheaper version. I had a similar doll which I called Judy. She came with me when I was six to get my tonsils out. To this day she still has the hospital band the nurse placed around Judy’s arm when I had my operation.
The dolls became a popular toy because of the unique adoption process which made it personal and special. Each doll came with their own unique name and birth certificate. Names could be officially changed but it was a process and this added to their charm. With a soft body to cuddle, sweet clothes to accessorise, adorable facial features and the iconic signature on the butt, the Cabbage Patch Kid dolls hit the spot for retro kids.
See the signature of Xavier Robert on the bottom? I was reading on My CP Collection about identifying the date from the signature, and it looks like this one was from 1985.
Identifying Cabbage Patch Kid from signature
- 1983 – Black
- 1984 – Green (Preemies and Foreign kids had Black siggies this year)
- 1985 – Blue
- 1986 – Red
- 1987 – Aqua
- 1988 – Lavender
- 1989 – Rose
Brooke was hoping someone might be able to help her with finding out more about her brother’s doll from the signature. Any feedback? Just leave it in the comments. The only thing I was curious about is the signature does not seem to be the traditional one from Xavier Robert (like the doll pictured above). However, it does seem to be one of the earlier signatures used by Xavier.
When we asked the BAFM community what your cabbage patch doll was called, we were blown away with the names. Some of them are hilarious. Others are a bit strange. Any wonder some of you requested a name change!
Jodie shared her doll called Dwight Matthew, who she played with when she was a child, and then her son after her. Oh, mine had one of those dummies too!
Here is a list in alphabetical order of some of the Cabbage Patch Kids that were adopted in the 80’s and 90’s. Some of these ‘kids’ are 30 years old. If you want yours on the list also, simply leave a comment below.

My Cabbage Patch Kid, from the 80’s of course, had light brown yarn loops for hair, blue eyes, dressed in pink corduroy overalls, I think there was a little giraffe on the bottom of his pant leg, but I can’t remember….my Aunt had made me different outfits for him, so the original outfit was misplaced over time, and moving from place to place. Anyway, I remember giggling with my mom, upon reading his name….I’ll never forget….Crosby Miles…thinking like “he crawls for miles”. I still have him, no clothes though, just the white plastic shoes. I also have a bald baby girl, Brenda Lee, still in her original pale blue and white outfit that has little blue flowers on the top part, her little white socks and white plastic shoes…maybe even her pacifier…I’d have to check my tote of childhood memorabilia though. The 1980’s original kids, look way cuter than the newer versions!!

My daughter had Gornell Suzanne. She got in 1989. Is there still a possibility of still being able to get this doll, as she would like her little daughter to have the same one she had. It was left behind when we had to leave town in an emergency situation.

Let’s see if I can get this right…
*Betina Carey arrived in 1986
*Bancroft Glenn in 1987
*Holly Lynn in 1988 (this one I named myself, went through the whole adoption process and everything)
*Mavis Katinka came to the family for my sister in 1991
Sadly, my dolls were brutally scarred by my little sister in the mid 90’s… It was an ink pen to the face of every single one. No one ever fully recovered, not myself or the dolls; that ink refused to come off. As we got older, I tried to tell myself that the marks were actually tattoos and my precious dolls had just matured along with me, becoming punk rock or something….but even punk rock didn’t last forever.

I adopted Maximilian Kevin in 1985 when I was 10. He was & still is known as Kevin. I gave him to my son when he was little & he loved him as much as I did as a child. Then when my son became a teenager Kevin ended up hidden under the bed ? I reclaimed him & now he sits in my bedroom where I see him all the time. I still love him ?

I received “Cara Fritzee” my CPK Preemie (signed in green) for Christmas of 1985. She went anywhere and everywhere I went for at least the next 10 years. That doll took one heck of a beating but was still able to be cleaned up for my daughter to play with almost 30 years later. I am now 40 and I still know right where she is. ?
