Brio Rescue Set – Review

Swedish company Brio have a long and interesting history, tracing back to 1884. Today, they are well known for their high quality toys. When it comes to buying toys for children, I have compiled a list of toys I have found added value to my children’s play for many years — not just with passing interest. Wooden sets like this are the type of toy that becomes an investment, providing years of play for children, and for different age groups too.

The Brio Rescue Set is a great starter set because it has a bit of everything: train track, station, road, bridge, vehicles, train, trees and figures. The recommended age is 3+, so it’s great for little hands, but will also grow with a child. Below is a video snapshot of the components.

What’s in the Box

There are 30 pieces in the Brio Rescue Set, including two figures and two vehicles (which each have a seperate carriage).

Setting Up

My son (9) set it up himself. The only tip I have with setting up is ensuring to clip the bridge track into the bridge (by just pressing down firmly). My son initially sat it on the bridge section, however it does clip down in to the bridge which makes it sturdy for play. The fun part about this set is its elevation and the train will fly down the decline.

Below is a minute video of my son setting it up. The set up is not complicated, so kids can get playing in no time.

Vehicles

Train

The train has an engine, and a carriage with logs of wood (that kids can unload/load). My son noticed later that the front part lifts open to reveal the engine. He loved that. It’s those little play details that Brio does so well!

Fire Engine

The fire engine is wonderful, and comes with two parts. The front part has lights and sirens and a section for a figure to fit. The second part has a working ladder and hose. There is a station to house the vehicle with a working garage door.

Note: Typically, I don’t appreciate toys with sound as most parents would understand! However I found the sirens quite subtle (there’s a video further below) and it really does add to the authenticity of play in this case.

Emergency Fire Engine

There is also an Emergency Fire Engine available to purchase seperately. Below is a 30 second video that shows what’s in the Emergency Fire Engine box.

Figures

I ADORE the Brio figures! The Rescue set comes with two figures, and there is one male, and one female. They are a lovely size for kids to hold while playing, and they fit inside the vehicle and can hold onto the ladder or fire hose.
