The longer I parent, the more I value gifting experiences to my children (over material things) and building memories with them. As I look back, I realise it’s the experiences we have together that the children remember for years to come, and the shared memories become like a glue that holds us together. So, I am always on the lookout for fun family experiences to share on the blog and….I’m excited to announce that Disney on Ice has released its 2018 tour dates. I’m so excited about this show. Our family LOVE Disney!
Disney On Ice is celebrating 100 Years of Magic this year and the show promises to be the most magical of all! The tour dates are below.

Shelley Craft on Investing in Childhood Memories
Queenslander, TV personality and mother of two, Shelley Craft returns as the national ambassador for Disney On Ice. Last year, BAFM writer Bec and her daughter had the opportunity to meet Shelley which was exciting. Shelley nails what is really special about this event: it’s about connection. Disney stories were special to Shelley as a child, and now she gets to share those same stories with her two daughters. Isn’t that what is so fun about Disney? It’s for everyone.
Below, Shelley shares her favourite ways to create and treasure childhood memories.
- Family Traditions. I love creating special experiences for our family that become our own traditions. Not only is it an opportunity to build lasting memories, but it is something that families can plan and enjoy time and time again – whether it’s doing something fun on the first or last day of the school term each year, creating a unique way to celebrate family birthdays, or attending an annual event or festival together.
- Be Present. Multi-tasking, technology and a busy mind can impact on quality time with children. As a frequent traveller with work, I try to be truly present when I’m at home with my family. I switch off the computer and mobile, and just focus on spending quality time at home with my girls.
- Shared experiences. Whether it’s attending a live event, riding bikes or baking a cake; sharing an activity or experience with children is such a great way to connect. I find that it can be the simplest thing – Milla and I do martial arts together! I get such great pleasure generating heartfelt memories.
- Less is more! We often get into the pattern of filling our lives with so many activities – and it can become exhausting. I like to pick an activity each weekend to do with my children, and not overshadow it by cramming in too much. I also apply the same idea when we go on holidays – so that we don’t return home worn out. It’s good to involve kids in choosing their favourites and adding them in.
- Capture moments. The saying that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ rings true in our household. Each year, I print a book for each girl with their artwork or certificates and birthday cards to chronicle each year. I do this for family holidays too. This way I can also visit my cherished images – those that really capture the year we had and the memories we shared. This is a wonderful way to relive special and everyday moments.

March 10, 2018 at 5:36 pmMy strongest childhood memory was going away and meeting family friends from cairns . After arriving at the accommodation the mums sent the dad’s and kids off to play at the playground while they sorted the unpacking . 5 min later one of the kids had fallen off the slide landing on his arm . The dads told him it was fine your fine dust it off . 48 hrs later and he was still complaining – off to the Drs – broken arm !!! It was the ongoing joke for the rest of the family holidays of who will break something 5 minutes in and everytime someone hurt themselves even as an adult now with our small kids ‘just dust it off ‘ gets thrown around as a joke with lots of laughs following .

March 10, 2018 at 7:19 pmMy strongest childhood memory was the first theatre show we went to see. My parents took myself, my brother and my sister to see ‘Seven Little Australians’. We had lived out of Brisbane until just before we went to see this so it was really special – and so magical. All the lights going up and down, special effects and a program! I still have the ticket for the show some 30 years later.

March 10, 2018 at 9:23 pmMy Nana would take me and my siblings on special outings, my favourite memory was when she took my sister and I to see Bambi at the movies it was a Re run held at a old style cinema, we both were scared at one point and hid underneath the old style movie chairs, Nana did not know what to do with two scared girls hiding and desperately tried to coax us back out to watch the movie. I’m not sure what she said to get us out but it possibly had something to do with teaching us to roll jaffas down the aisle.

March 11, 2018 at 12:43 pmOne of my strongest childhood memories is seeing Disney on Ice with my sister. Probably 30 years ago now! I don’t remember much of the show but I do remember getting a Mickey Mouse torch and my sister was allowed to sleep in my bed that night! We mucked around for ages with our torches before being told to go to sleep haha

March 13, 2018 at 9:22 amMy earliest and strongest childhood memory is playing at kindergarten.
We had a made a big submarine using wooden blocks, and the whole class was in the creation singing “we all live in a yellow submarine” It reminds me of a simpler time when making something out of nothing was so fun! That being young and included in the group was all we needed, and that the simplest things can often be the most fun!

March 15, 2018 at 12:37 pmThe strongest *special* memory from my childhood was the day that my parents, who always struggled financially, surprised my sister and I with a Christmas holiday trip to SeaWorld.
We had photos taken with the dolphins, and even though I left my shoes at home, it was honestly one of the most memorable, one of the best days of my childhood!

March 16, 2018 at 12:31 pmmy strongest childhood memories are all linked to Ulladulla in NSW. our family have camped there for 5 generations and i love sharing the many family stories of that place with my children now. such include where my great grandparents carved their initials in the tree,to my uncles throwing spiders over the wall of the open air cinema during arachnaphobia, to the little beach shak that my dads family lived in when he met my mum on holidays as a girl. childhood is such an important time to share precious family memories.

March 16, 2018 at 12:36 pmMy favourite memory is when I was 5years old and visited Switzerland for the first time with my family, it was the first time my brother and I meet our grandparents, and our dads family, saw and played in the snow for the first time, which gave us our first frostbite experience and our first white Christmas.

March 17, 2018 at 7:58 amMy strongest childhood memory is spending the weekend with my grandparents when my parents went away. They would take us to church, prepare special meals and snacks we enjoyed, fill a nice hot bath, shampoo our hair and give up their bed for us. My grandparents have both passed away and we miss them dearly, but these special memories we’ll always cherish.

March 23, 2018 at 10:09 amGoing to the cinema with my Nanna whenever a new Disney movie came out. She absolutely loved the magic of Disney movies! Going to see Beauty and the Beast with her when I was about 9 or 10 would be my strongest childhood memory of Nanna. She was a tough, no-nonsense, proper lady who’d raised 4 children as a single mother, lost 2 husbands, ran a farm and lived through a World War…but she came out of the cinemas that day like an excited little girl again!

March 27, 2018 at 11:33 amBaking with my mum and nan! Every year my mum and Nan would bake all different cakes, puddings, boiled puddings (on the stove top and in the old wood fired copper in the backyard). They’d be up to all hours of the night and dad would be woken to wash up when required. Any cakes that didn’t make the cut literally got thrown out the window ha ha.

March 27, 2018 at 9:05 pmMy fondest memory of my childhood was having a grandmother that loved and supported my passion and dream for dance. As my mother was lost in her own little world, my grandmother stepped in and took me to many musicals and ballets such as Phantom of the Opera, High School Musical, The Lion King and The Nutcracker Ballet to name a few. She encourage and helped me pursue my live of dance. In 2002, I was accepted into a full time performing arts school. My grandmother financially supported me upfront until I could repay the loan. Since graduating, I was the sole owner of a local dance school in a country town in Qld. My grandmother passed over 3 years ago and I would like to be able to continue that tradition with my children. My children and I have had a very tough past 4 years with looking their father to suicide, my grandmother, my mum 5 months after and my brother to suicide last year. I have met a wonderful man who took on my three children but money has been tough for me. I have always wanted to take my children yo Disney on Ice. My step mum use to take my sister’s and I all the time when we were younger. Sorry for the raw post but I would love to win these tickets to give my children an opportunity to see a live show. Thank you
