The paper plate would have to be one of the most versatile craft materials you can use. It can be turned into any animal, insect or object. You’re only limited by your imagination. We decided to have a craft morning on the school holidays and created these easy paper plate crafts: Butterflies and Rainbows.
I will warn you that it is a little messy because paint is involved… but that’s part of the fun when creating these crafts. I find painting therapeutic and I’ve never met a kid that doesn’t like to paint.
Making these two crafts at once allows for one paper plate design to dry, while painting the other.
Paper Plate Butterfly
For the paper plater butterfly, you can choose to add a paddle pop stick so it can be turned into a puppet. My eldest didn’t want a paddle pop stick on hers as she wanted it to be pinned to her noticeboard.
Materials
- Paper Plates
- Scissors
- Paint
- Brushes
- Craft Glue
- Paddle Pop Stick
- 3 Pom Poms
- Googley Eyes
Instructions
1. Cut the wings out for the butterfly. You want to do an arched m shape on the inside of the paper plate, leaving the round curved edge on the outside.
2. Paint the wings and allow them to dry.
3. Once dry, glue the butterfly wings together. And then add the three pom poms for the head and body.
4. Glue the googley eyes on the head pom pom.
5. Add the paddle pop stick to turn into a puppet. (or not)
Paper Plate Rainbow
My girls loved painting this rainbow. We sang the song to work out which colours needed to be painted.
Materials
- Paper Plates
- Scissors
- Paint
- Paint Brush
- Craft Glue
- Cotton Balls
Instructions
1. Cut a paper plate in half.
2. Paint each colour on the semi-circle to create your rainbow. Red, yellow, pink, green, purple, orange and blue.
3. Allow the paint to dry.
4. Once dry, glue the cotton balls at the end of the rainbows for clouds.
5. Both the butterflies and rainbows look quite effective when put together. This would make an easy playgroup craft activity.
