Review
Our sofa gets a lot of use! Koala was looking for people to review their sofas (you may know the company from their mattress range) and our hand-me-down sofa really needed updating so I put my hand up.
From the moment I ordered, I have been blown away by Koala’s customer service. I ordered the 3-Seater Sofa and the Ottoman and it arrived THE SAME DAY. Not only that, but Koala kept me updated along the way. They sent me just the right sort of information, and in snippets so it wasn’t an info-overload. For example, they sent me a link to the setup guide while I was waiting for the sofa to arrive.
The sofa arrived at our door in boxes. The 3-Seater came in three boxes (pictured below).
- Sofa arms
- Backseat + cushions
- Seat frame + cushions

And the Ottoman comes in its own box.

Assembly
Part of the Koala design is an easy setup. This means there are no special tools required, and it’s quick. I can confirm it IS easy. We opened all the boxes first so we had all the elements ready to go. Then, it’s a simple matter of screwing the sides and back together with the screws that have large handles attached (which makes it easy on the hands), adding the legs, and finally throwing on the cushions. My husband and I are not the most capable people when it comes to furniture assembly, but even we had the sofa up in under 10 minutes.
About the Sofa
It’s super comfy!! That’s the first thing I’ll say. The sofa has just the right sort of supportive sink-in softness. The material appears to be durable but it is not rough. Made from 70% polyester and 30% acrylic, it is designed to be easy to spot clean – a great option for families and pet owners. There are two colour choices, grey and blue. I picked the bonnie doon blue to compliment the bright-coloured cushions I already had. The sofa has wide arms which are great for arms and feet – because what good is a sofa if you can’t lounge with your feet up. The sofa sits on beech timber feet so it is easy to vacuum underneath.

I also noticed the sofa does not overtake the room like our previous one, but it seems to offer more sitting space. It adds to the room without dominating it. The design is modern and minimal so it would suit most spaces. I really like the Ottoman because it can be easily moved for varying needs and extends the lounging function of the sofa.
Dimensions

It’s good to know the sofa has a 5-year warranty, and all materials used in the sofa come from sustainable sources, including the wooden legs which are FSC certified. The packaging is all recyclable too. The cardboard boxes can go in the home recycling bin and places like Woolies have bins to recycle the other packaging materials.
Tip: Before you recycle the cardboard boxes, use them for play activities. They make a wonderful base for play roads.

The sofa is long enough for a tall person to lie down.

Wide enough to spoon cuddle.

And can facilitate two lounging adults easily.

The sofa comes with a little hidden surprise too: a cute stuffed turtle toy my daughter called Boris. With every sofa purchase, Koala supports WWF-Australia, focusing on helping Australian turtles and their habitat.

Considerations
There is real attention to detail with the Koala products so there is not much to say here. There are only two considerations I would mention. First, there is limited colour choice, however, the colours available are neutral and would suit most spaces. Secondly, the sofa cushions are not designed to be removed for washing. However the material is designed to be easy to spot-clean on a day-to-day basis, and you can use upholstery shampoo for a thorough clean as needed.
Koala exceeded my expectations at every level. I am thrilled with the sofa and am already planning to extend our range to include the 2-Seater.

October 21, 2020 at 11:27 pmHi Kelly,
Thank you for writing up this review. I was wondering if you could help me. My husband and I live in Alice Springs and don’t have many options to buy furniture – haven’t found one that we find supportive and firm. We’re looking at buying a couch and considering a koala one. Is the cushioning firm? My husband has chronic back paint and we want something really firm and supportive of the lower back. Is it easy to get up from? We will have to pay the return freight so really want to make sure it’s what we’re looking for.

October 22, 2020 at 11:29 amHi Linda. So we’ve had the sofa now since January (2020) and have been really happy with it. In terms of the firmness, I would probably say it’s mid-range. I might just take a little video of me pressing it down and I’ll email it to you. Hope that helps!

February 16, 2021 at 11:02 pmHi. I like these but I’m a bit concerned about quite a few people reporting them piling – while piling is specifically stated on the Koala website not to ‘count as a fault’. Have you noticed this at all?

February 19, 2021 at 9:35 amHi Joel. I’ve had the sofa for a year now and I think it’s held up really well. I’ll drop you a quick email with a close up of the sofa so you can see the fabric. I haven’t noticed pilling, the only thing I would say is that the blue colour I have does show up a little more dust etc.
