Dubai Safari

I looked out to an ocean of sand with rippled waves of rolling dunes. Sky and sand: everywhere. The terrain was spotted with the odd scrub or two. On one side of me, I watched the sun slip down, and in its wake, coloured light spread across the sky like ink leaking through a paper towel. On the other side of me, the moon rose bright and bold, casting a silver glow along the wispy remnants of clouds on the ever-darkening sky. The air was cool. The sand soft. The sky above: a canvas of glory. To stand, encompassed by such wonder and beauty, is life altering. It has to be.

If I could go back there to that moment, there is something I would do: I would stand there in the middle of it all, and stretch my hands out wide while tilting my body as the sun disappeared and the moon lifted into the sky. I don’t know why I want to do that, but I do.

That’s the best I can do at describing what I felt and saw when I met the desert one perfect evening in Dubai. The safari was the one thing I was most looking forward to on this trip. I was not disappointed. My only complaint is this: I didn’t get to sit quietly in the sand for a little longer. Oh, to just capture the moment I described a little longer.

The safari is one of those experiences that makes a difference to your life somehow. I felt the same way after I pony trekked in the mountains of Lesotho with my daughters.

The safari was run through Platinum Heritage, and from all the wonderful things I’ve done in Dubai, if you could only put one thing on your bucket list, this would be it.

I can’t do it justice with my words, or pictures, so I’ll simply give a snap shot of the afternoon and evening.
